Summer
Surge
Summer! You gotta love it! Because if you don't... you'll go insane.
We are running around like headless chickens trying to keep up with
softball schedules, dance recitals, conferences, weekend projects
and more! It's a rare occasion to sit down to a meal that's NOT on
the bleachers at a ballpark. I do love it though and wouldn't trade
it for the world. Now that I'm home with the kids full time, it's
a lot easier to handle. I don't know how we did it before. How soon
I've forgotten the days of rushing to the field in heels and a suit!
Summer is all too short though. Maybe it's the hectic schedule, maybe
it's the tremendous list of all the things we'd like to accomplish
during the school break... Whatever it is, I wish it was longer.
I sincerely hope that all of you are enjoying some R&R with the
kids, casting out a line, dipping your toes in the pool or just relaxing
on the patio with a nice cold drink. Whatever you fancy, enjoy your
summer! |

Fireworks
Frenzy
Have you ever stopped to wonder why seemingly intelligent people
are so fascinated with dabbling in pyromania whenever given the
chance? Talk to any man about fireworks and watch the little gleam
appear in his eye like a smoldering sparkler.
Just like candy canes on store shelves in August... the raising
of big-top tents along the interstate leading up to the 4th is occurring
earlier every year. You can't miss them, strategically placed at
the edge of a cornfield, not to be missed by every aspiring arsonist
in the county.
I must admit, it is fun wandering through the aisles under the big-top
just reading some of the names like; Big Honkin Star, Operation
Justice, Cajun Pageant and Pandemonium. Nothing says, "my eye
will be twitching in the morning" like Clustering Cicadas.
I don't even want to know what that little beauty does.
You can almost set your watch by the phone call you get out of the
blue from ol' cousin Ned up in Nebraska who has "really been
missin' you" and wants to come down for a visit. "Oh...
and by the way... do they have that-there firecracker stand up yet?"
Poor Ned, living in a state where the sale of fireworks is banned.
I much prefer our method over the past few years of gathering our
lawn chairs, getting our drinks mixed and propping ourselves up
to watch some other guy burn through a few hundred dollars. Somehow,
knowing I didn't write the check for the pyrotechnic parade makes
for a nice and peaceful evening.
Whether you're lighting punks or a mooching punk like me, enjoy
your 4th of July festivities and remember what your parents always
told you... "Stay back! It might not be a dud!"
